The HISTORY OF THE OLD RAILWAY STATION began in 1910, when the Central Brazil Railway (EFCB) extended its branch line from the Corinto station to Pirapora. The government’s plan was to have the railway cross the bridge over the São Francisco River. In 1922, the “Independência Railway Station” was inaugurated in the São Francisco de Pirapora district (now Buritizeiro), but it was decommissioned in the following decade. For much of the 20th century, the railway was the main means of transportation and communication between Pirapora and the central-southern part of the country.
Transporting cargo, passengers, and valuables, the railway was a key reference in the community’s progress. The EFCB was later incorporated into the Federal Railway Network (RFFSA), and passenger services in Pirapora were discontinued in 1978. In parallel, the building and square of the old railway station (declared historical heritage) hosted the public library and occasionally held festive events.
