CARIRIS SQUARE

The CARIRIS SQUARE, a historical and geographical landmark of Pirapora, is located at the exact site of the old Cariri village (17th century) and the settlement founded by fishermen, boatmen, cowhands, and muleteers in 1860. The first chapel of the village, dedicated to Saint Joseph, was also built there, existing between 1886 and 1932.

The “Largo da Praça” was later also known as “Praça Burlamaqui” and “Praça Mello Viana.” The bandstand was built in 1935, and the square and its garden were expanded in 1950. In 1952, it received the statue of ‘Saint Peter the Fisherman’ and the monument commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Pirapora. The square was renovated in 1987. Between 2002 and 2024, the square was enlivened by the “Art and Culture Fair” held on Friday nights.
