CARRANCA CRAFTSMANSHIP

The CARRANCA CRAFTSMANSHIP represents the legends, myths, and riverine customs of the São Francisco River, becoming symbols of protection for boatmen and rowers on the river. Its totemic representation, strengthened by popular imagination, has become a hallmark of regional traditional craftsmanship. Resilient, this artistic expression from the São Francisco region brings together the last artists who continue to keep the craft and tradition “alive.”

Currently, the Association of Craftsmen (Casa dos Carranqueiros) in Pirapora is located at Av. Jeferson Gitirana s/n° – Santa Terezinha neighborhood, with sales points in the Municipal Market. The remaining active artisans work on drawing, cutting, decorating, and finishing the carrancas, as well as creating various sacred images, replicas of the Benjamin Guimarães Steamship, boats, rosaries, crosses, and other pieces.
